Frequently Asked Questions

Let’s clarify your confusions. Here are some of the Frequently Asked Questions which most of our client asks.

Have a question in mind

Looking for more info? Send a question to the tour agent to find out more.

Is a guide compulsory?

Yes. It is mandatory to hire an authorized local guide (often called a tracker or naturalist) to enter the forest. They are essential for navigation, safety, and spotting endemic wildlife.

⏰ How long does a day tour last?

A common day trek lasts 5 to 6 hours (covering key areas for birdwatching and wildlife). Shorter tours are 3-4 hours, while full-day, deeper excursions can last 7-9 hours.

Which entrance is best?

The main entrances are Kudawa (north/west) and Deniyaya/Lankagama (south/east). Kudawa is often considered better for bird observation, while Lankagama leads to several waterfalls where you can swim.

When is the best time to visit?

The driest periods are generally January to April and August to December. However, as a rainforest, expect rain at any time. Mornings are best for wildlife viewing and avoiding the midday heat.

What should I wear?

Wear long pants and long-sleeved tops in light, breathable fabrics (to protect against sun, insects, and leeches). Sturdy walking shoes or boots with good traction are essential, as trails can be slippery.

Are there leeches?

Yes, leeches are highly common. Bring or purchase leech socks at your accommodation or the entrance—they are the best defense. Guides often provide salt or a repellent spray to remove them.

What should I bring?

bring?Water (plenty, or a water filter), insect/mosquito repellent, a rain jacket/poncho, snacks/packed lunch (if not provided), and your camera with good zoom.

Sightings I can expect?

You are more likely to see endemic birds (like the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie and Red-faced Malkoha) and smaller endemic mammals (like the Purple-faced Leaf Monkey) and various amphibians, reptiles, and insects. Leopards are extremely rare.
