Have a question in mind

Looking for more info? Send a question to the tour agent to find out more.

What is the best time of year to go on a wildlife safari in Sri Lanka?

The best time generally depends on the park.

  • Yala & Udawalawe: The dry season from May to September is often considered best as animals congregate around water sources, making them easier to spot. However, Yala typically closes for a short period (usually September-October) for drought management.

  • Minneriya/Kaudulla: "The Gathering" of elephants is spectacular from July to September/October.

  • Whale & Dolphin Watching (not a land safari but often combined): The best time is November to April on the south coast (Mirissa) and May to September on the east coast (Trincomalee).

How long does a typical safari tour last?

Most safaris are either a half-day (morning or afternoon), lasting approximately 3-4 hours, or a full-day tour. Full-day tours offer more time for sightings and exploring different areas of the park.

What should I wear and bring on a safari?

  • Clothing: Light, comfortable, breathable clothing in neutral colors (khaki, green, brown) is recommended to blend in and avoid disturbing animals. A hat and sunglasses are essential for sun protection.

  • Footwear: Comfortable closed-toe shoes.

  • Essentials: Sunscreen, insect repellent, camera with extra batteries/memory card, binoculars (highly recommended!), a reusable water bottle.

  • Weather: A light jacket or shawl might be useful for early morning safaris as it can be cooler.

Are children allowed on safari tours?

Yes, children are generally allowed and often enjoy safaris. However, very young children might find it challenging to sit quietly for extended periods. Most tour operators have policies regarding minimum age for certain activities; it's best to check with your specific tour provider.

How safe are the safari tours?

Safari tours are generally very safe. All tours are conducted in sturdy 4x4 safari jeeps with experienced drivers/trackers who know the park rules and animal behavior. It's crucial to follow your guide's instructions at all times, remain inside the vehicle, and avoid making loud noises or sudden movements that could disturb the wildlife.

Can I get out of the jeep during the safari?

For safety reasons and to protect the wildlife, visitors are strictly prohibited from getting out of the jeep in designated wildlife viewing areas. There might be specific designated picnic or restroom stops where it is safe to alight, but always follow your guide's instructions.

What kind of wildlife can I expect to see on a safari in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka is a biodiversity hotspot! You can expect to see a wide range of animals depending on the park. Yala National Park is famous for leopards, elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and various bird species. Udawalawe National Park is best for large herds of elephants. Other parks offer opportunities to see monkeys, deer, wild boar, and many endemic birds.

  • Whale & Dolphin Watching (not a land safari but often combined): The best time is November to April on the south coast (Mirissa) and May to September on the east coast (Trincomalee).
